The dramatic revelation that Central Elections Committee chairman Judge Noam Sohlberg has turned to Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar demanding an investigation into suspected foreign interference and massive voter bribery in the Arab sector continues to send shockwaves through Israel's political and media establishment. Journalist Attila Somfalvi has published a sharp and pointed response, raising difficult questions about the conduct of the security establishment and about who stands to gain politically from the storm.
"Insane! This is truly insane. Psychotic, frightening, disturbing and worrying," Somfalvi opened his analysis.
Addressing the public debate over Qatar's motive for interfering in the elections, Somfalvi rejected simplistic arguments and explained the strategic logic behind the influence campaign: "Anyone engineering consciousness about Qatar and the connection to Bibi, and if Qatar is for Bibi then how is it transferring money to parties against Bibi, well, two answers: Countries like Qatar produce de-stabilization as policy. The goal is to damage public trust, good order, in the target state. And that's what's happening right now: public trust in the election results is plummeting."
Somfalvi then turned directly to analyst Amit Segal and raised a pointed political theory: "And now, in response to Mr. Segal: and who benefits from this event at this very moment? That's right, Bibi."
