Liberman: no cooperation with Ra'am

With 48 hours until the 26th Knesset is sworn in, the opposition bloc fractures over legislative cooperation and the choice of Knesset speaker

With just 48 hours remaining until the swearing-in of the 26th Knesset, tensions inside the opposition bloc are rising over legislative cooperation and the selection of a Knesset speaker.

Opposition leaders are expected to present a consensus candidate for speaker tomorrow, but significant obstacles have emerged around parliamentary coordination within the bloc.

Journalist Shirit Avitan Cohen asked a spokesman for Yisrael Beiteinu chair Avigdor Liberman whether the party would cooperate on legislation with Ra'am, the Arab Islamist party. The answer was unambiguous: "We are not cooperating with anyone. We are simply working to remove the chairman."

Despite ruling out broad legislative cooperation, Liberman's office clarified that he continues to back Yair Lapid for the position of Knesset speaker, even as the opposition struggles to reach agreement among its component parts.
