Paris Slams the Door on Smotrich
Following a previous ban on minister Ben-Gvir, the French Foreign Minister implements severe entry restrictions and Bans Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich Due to French criticism of Israel
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced an official entry ban preventing Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich from entering French territory.
The decision targets Smotrich's direct policy agenda regarding West Bank settlements and sovereign expansion, underscoring a rapidly intensifying wave of European measures directed at the Israeli government.
In a public statement, Barrot clarified that the travel ban explicitly bars Smotrich alongside four prominent settler organization leaders and twenty-one individuals classified by France as violent settlers.
Policy Clashes
The French Foreign Ministry leveled severe criticisms against Smotrich, asserting that he actively promotes the annexation of the West Bank, an agenda the minister openly declares.
Barrot also condemned Smotrich's public support for the construction of new West Bank settlements, the resettlement of the Gaza Strip, and measures contributing to the imminent economic collapse of the Palestinian Authority.
According to Barrot, these strategic policies result in catastrophic consequences for the Palestinian population. The Foreign Minister emphasized that Smotrich's platform is entirely unacceptable to the vast majority of the international community, which remains fundamentally committed to a negotiated two-state solution.
European Sanctions
The punitive step taken by Paris reflects a larger, coordinated push across Europe to penalize specific members of the Israeli government. The European Union recently convened dramatic deliberations aimed at passing a comprehensive package of new sanctions against Israel and its ministers, a move that was only halted by an official veto from the Czech Republic.
Simultaneously, Italy launched a criminal investigation into National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his involvement in video footage alongside activists confronting a Gaza-bound flotilla. In parallel, several pro-Palestinian advocacy groups filed petitions with the International Criminal Court in The Hague, requesting an expansion of the current investigation into Israeli actions in the Palestinian territories.
Diplomatic Fallout
The diplomatic confrontation unfolds amid a severe deterioration in bilateral relations between Israel and France, which has accelerated significantly following Israel's recent military exchanges with Iran.
French President Emmanuel Macron has routinely criticized Israeli military maneuvers, which have historically operated with United States backing.
Influential political factions and officials within Paris have continuously accused Israel of war crimes against Palestinians, repeatedly insisting that the European Union and the United Nations must implement strict measures to curtail Israel’s diplomatic and economic standing on the global stage.
