Overturned Vehicle
Major Crash Shuts Down Garden State Parkway Northbound Lanes
This is a developing story.

A dramatic midday crash involving an overturned vehicle has brought traffic to a grinding halt on the Garden State Parkway's northbound express lanes, just north of Exit 109 (CR 520) in Monmouth County's Middletown Township.
What began as a blockage of the left and center lanes around 1:38 PM EST escalated into a full closure of all lanes by 1:55 PM, stranding motorists and triggering massive backups during the busy post-holiday travel period.
Official alerts from the New Jersey Department of Transportation's 511NJ service describe the scene as a "crash and overturned vehicle."
Emergency crews are on site, but the incident's severity has led to urgent warnings for drivers to seek alternate routes, as delays stretch for miles in the Jersey Shore area. This disruption compounds a day of multiple incidents on the Parkway, including:
A southbound crash south of Exit 149 (CR 506) in Bloomfield, Essex County, initially blocking the left lane before shifting to the right shoulder.
Another southbound collision north of Exit 58 (CR 539) in Little Egg Harbor Township, Ocean County, potentially blocking one lane since around 9:59 AM EST.
A partial ramp blockage at the southbound local lanes entrance to the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area in Sayreville, Middlesex County, reported early morning.
Nearby, a related crash on the New Jersey Turnpike's inner roadway southbound, north of Interchange 11 (connecting to the Parkway) in Woodbridge Township, has blocked the right lane and shoulder since before 4:00 AM EST, further snarling regional traffic.
With partly cloudy skies and no reported weather hazards, officials point to heightened holiday volumes as a possible contributor to the chaos. Drivers are urged to monitor 511nj.org for real-time updates and avoid the area if possible.
This comes just days after a fatal Christmas Eve crash on the Parkway near Exit 132 in Woodbridge, where a 22-year-old Elizabeth man tragically lost his life in a multi-vehicle collision.
