Climate activist Greta Thunberg, along with members of Extinction Rebellion, participated in a protest on November 22-24, 2025, where they dyed Venice's Grand Canal bright green using a non-toxic fluorescein dye to highlight the impacts of climate change and criticize Italy's stance at the COP30 summit in Brazil.

The stunt was part of a coordinated action across multiple Italian cities, including hanging "Stop Ecocide" banners from the Rialto Bridge and flash mobs in red cloaks.

As a consequence, Thunberg and about 35 other protesters were issued a 48-hour ban from entering Venice and fined €150 (about $172) each for what officials called vandalism that disrespects the city's history and fragility.

Veneto Governor Luca Zaia condemned the act, noting potential environmental risks despite the group's claims of harmlessness.

This follows a pattern of similar Extinction Rebellion actions, like a 2023 canal dyeing, and Thunberg's recent detention during a Gaza aid flotilla in October 2025.
