First comments after undisclosed meeting with Netanyahu

Hegseth on secret Israel visit

Pete Hegseth speaks publicly for the first time about his unannounced trip to Israel, where he met with US Central Command forces and Prime Minister Netanyahu: They're doing historic work to ensure Iran never gets a nuclear weapon

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed his secret visit to Israel for the first time Tuesday evening, a day after touring the US Central Command base and meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Uvda Air Base in southern Israel.

"As you know, American warfighters are the best in the world. Today I returned from a visit to a Central Command base, where I met with pilots, aerial refueling personnel, and maintenance crews," Hegseth said. "They're doing historic work to ensure Iran never gets a nuclear weapon. When I look in their eyes, I look into the eyes of the best people in our country."

News of Hegseth's undisclosed visit to Israel first broke this morning. According to reports, Netanyahu's meeting with the senior American official at the southern base lasted over two hours and included senior officials from the United Arab Emirates.

The Pentagon issued no advance notice of the visit, which came at a particularly sensitive moment: just eight days before Israel's Knesset elections, and as Israel and the United States hold discussions about the possibility of renewing military action against Iran.
