A commercial vessel successfully repelled an attempted hijacking near the shores of Aden on Wednesday, maritime security sources reported.
According to initial accounts, several high-speed boats carrying armed men equipped with machine guns and RPGs approached the ship in the Gulf of Aden. The attackers closed in on the vessel, posing an immediate threat to the crew.
The ship’s onboard private security team responded promptly, opening fire to deter the assailants. The armed boats eventually withdrew and fled the scene without boarding the vessel.
No injuries to the crew were reported, and the ship continued its voyage safely.
The Gulf of Aden has seen a resurgence in piracy-style attacks in recent months, amid ongoing regional instability following the Iran conflict and persistent Houthi activity in Yemeni waters. Maritime authorities, including the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), regularly issue warnings to vessels transiting the area to maintain heightened vigilance and employ armed security where possible.
