Tanker Attacked Off Oman’s Sohar Port Leaving One Dead, Two Missing
Oman tanker fire Sohar Port: One dead, two missing after suspicious incident 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar. UKMTO warning issued near Strait of Hormuz.

A tanker experienced a fire in its engine room approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar Port in Oman, prompting an emergency response from local authorities, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO issued a warning on Wednesday describing the incident as “suspicious activity.”
The vessel has reported one casualty and two crew members missing, with no environmental impact such as an oil spill confirmed so far.
Omani authorities are on scene assisting with crew evacuation.
The fire broke out as the vessel attempted to transit waters near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.
Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause. No official confirmation has linked the incident to any external attack, including claims circulating on social media attributing it to Iranian forces.
Context in Heightened Regional Tensions
The Gulf of Oman has seen increased maritime incidents amid the ongoing 2026 Iran-related conflict, including prior attacks on shipping, US enforcement of a blockade on Iranian ports, and strikes on vessels attempting to breach restrictions. Sohar, a major industrial and port hub in northern Oman, has been affected by regional security alerts in recent months.
UKMTO has advised all vessels in the area to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.
This is a developing story.
