French shipping company CMA CGM has confirmed that its Maltese-flagged container vessel, the CMA CGM San Antonio, was the target of an attack while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday evening, May 5.

The company said the vessel sustained damage and that several crew members were injured. The injured seafarers, reported to include Filipino nationals, have been evacuated and are receiving medical care. CMA CGM stated it is closely monitoring the situation and providing full support to the crew and their families.

Details of the Incident

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) earlier reported that a cargo vessel was struck by a “projectile of unknown origin” in the Strait of Hormuz around 18:30 GMT on May 5. U.S. officials cited by CBS News indicated the ship may have been hit by a land-based cruise missile. The vessel reportedly went dark on the Automatic Identification System (AIS) for security reasons following the strike.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region and follows the recent launch, and subsequent pause, of the U.S.-led “Project Freedom” maritime security corridor aimed at protecting commercial shipping through the vital chokepoint.
