President Donald Trump on Wednesday shared a video on Truth Social that highlights what it describes as decades of deadly attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies against Americans, framing the tally as thousands killed since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
The roughly one-minute video uses dramatic graphics, historical footage of “Death to America” chants and hostage scenes, and an alarm-clock motif to assert that Iran has been responsible for American deaths “every year for 47 years.” It contrasts past U.S. administrations’ policies with Trump’s “maximum pressure” approach and ends with a message of gratitude to the president.
The video’s central claim aligns with long-standing U.S. government assessments. According to Pentagon and State Department records, Iran and its affiliated terror groups — including Hezbollah, Hamas and Iraqi Shiite militias — have been linked to the deaths of more than 1,000 Americans since 1979. The largest single toll came during the Iraq War, where Iran-backed explosively formed penetrators and other weapons killed an estimated 600 or more U.S. troops between 2003 and 2011.
Key incidents cited in official timelines include:
- The 1979–1981 U.S. Embassy hostage crisis in Tehran. The 1983 Beirut barracks bombing that killed 241 U.S. service members, attributed to Iran-backed Hezbollah.
- The 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 U.S. airmen.Multiple attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- The October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel, which killed 46 Americans.
- Recent drone and rocket attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria and Jordan.
