Jill Biden Reveals She Thought Her Husband Was Having a Stroke During the 2024 Debate

Nearly two years after one of the most consequential nights in modern American political history, Jill Biden has offered her most candid account yet of what she was thinking as she watched her husband fall apart on live television.

"I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never," the former first lady told CBS News in an interview set to air Sunday. "I don't know what happened. As I watched it, I thought, 'Oh my God, he's having a stroke.' And it scared me to death."

The interview marks the first time she has described her private reaction as a medical concern rather than a political setback. During the debate itself and in the days that followed, Jill Biden was among her husband's most forceful public defenders, insisting he was fit to serve and urging the Democratic Party to hold the line behind him.

During the June 2024 debate in Atlanta, Biden appeared confused and tired, giving raspy and sometimes unintelligible responses. He later blamed a cold and fatigue for his poor performance. Party operatives and lawmakers began calling for Biden to drop out of the race almost as soon as the event was over.

Biden withdrew from the race the following month, 107 days before the election, and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who went on to lose to Donald Trump.

The comments coincide with the release of Jill Biden's memoir, "View from the East Wing," due out June 2, in which she discusses the 2024 campaign, her role as first lady, and the pressures surrounding the debate period.

The revelation is likely to reignite debate over what Democratic Party insiders knew about Biden's condition and when, particularly given how forcefully his inner circle, including Jill Biden herself, pushed back against concerns about his fitness in the months leading up to and following the debate.
