Emmy-winning actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Monday morning in Hollywood following an altercation with a ride-share driver, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police said officers responded shortly after midnight to a report of an assault near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. Investigators allege that Sutherland entered a ride-share vehicle and then physically assaulted the driver, making criminal threats during the encounter. Authorities identified Sutherland at the scene and took him into custody.
The 59-year-old actor was arrested on suspicion of felony criminal threats. Police said the driver did not sustain injuries requiring medical treatment.
Sutherland was released a few hours later after posting $50,000 bail. Court records indicate he is scheduled to appear before a judge on February 2. As of publication, his representatives had not issued a public response.
Sutherland is best known for his portrayal of counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer on 24, a role that earned him both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. His film career includes prominent roles in Stand by Me, The Lost Boys, Flatliners, and A Few Good Men. More recently, he starred as the U.S. president in Designated Survivor.
The incident adds to a history of prior legal trouble for the actor. In 2007, Sutherland served jail time following a DUI conviction and probation violation. He was arrested on an assault charge in 2009, which was later dropped, and had a separate arrest related to a traffic incident in Hollywood in 2020.
Sutherland is the son of the late Donald Sutherland, who died in 2024. The current case remains under investigation by LAPD’s Hollywood Division.
