US Army Orders Laser Anti-Drone Weapon

Revolutionary directed-energy weapon promises to intercept drones at fraction of traditional missile costs, using only electricity per shot

The United States Army announced this week that it has signed its first production contract for a high-energy laser weapon system designed to destroy unmanned aerial vehicles. The agreement with defense contractor AeroVironment represents a significant milestone in developing next-generation air defense capabilities based on directed energy rather than traditional missiles.

The system, designated High Energy Laser (E-HEL), is a continuous-beam laser cannon capable of generating a focused energy beam that destroys airborne targets. Its primary advantage lies in operational economics: while conventional interceptor missiles cost tens of thousands of dollars per unit, each laser "shot" requires only the cost of electricity to fire, making it dramatically cheaper to operate.

General Christopher Lamb, Vice Chief of Staff of the US Army, explained that the directed-energy program will provide military units with new capabilities to counter drone threats. "The system provides a technological solution to the central challenge of the modern battlefield," he stated in an official announcement.

Engineers developed the weapon using an open modular design architecture featuring 11 primary interfaces. This approach enables broad operational flexibility—the system isn't limited to a single platform or vehicle type, and can be deployed from fixed installations, semi-permanent tactical sites, or mobile combat vehicles. The open architecture also allows for continuous technological upgrades and integration of new capabilities as they emerge.

Israel has already incorporated laser technology into its Iron Dome missile defense system, with the Israeli "Iron Beam" system integrated into battery control centers. Israeli defense company Elbit Systems recently unveiled an airborne laser system mounted on helicopters and aircraft for intercepting drone swarms.

In recent years, drones and unmanned aircraft have become central weapons in conflict zones worldwide, prompting militaries to seek cost-effective solutions. Traditional interceptor missiles are extremely expensive when defending against relatively inexpensive targets.

The US Army emphasized that because the system runs on electricity, operators can engage targets at significantly lower cost per shot. This capability is expected to transform battlefield dynamics, particularly in scenarios requiring defense against multiple simultaneous airborne threats.
