President Trump held a direct phone call with Joseph Aoun today, following reports that the Lebanese leader refused to speak with Prime Minister Netanyahu despite Trump’s earlier promise of a historic breakthrough.

A high-stakes diplomatic effort by the Trump administration to facilitate a direct conversation between the leaders of Israel and Lebanon has stalled. Although President Trump had publicly touted a historic phone call between the two sides—the first in 34 years—Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reportedly rejected the proposal during a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In place of the promised dialogue between Aoun and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump spoke directly with the Lebanese President today. While the White House has not yet released the full details of the call, the shift highlights the significant challenges in bringing the two warring nations to the table. Lebanese officials emphasized that Aoun would not engage with Netanyahu "in the near future," effectively delaying the promised diplomatic milestone indefinitely.

Northern Leaders: "Disarm Hezbollah Before Any Talks"

The diplomatic tension comes as Hezbollah continues its relentless shelling of northern Israel, with dozens of rockets and drones launched at Israeli communities daily. The ongoing violence has sparked fierce criticism from heads of northern municipalities, who have slammed the idea of negotiating under fire.

"It is unacceptable to hold diplomatic talks while our residents are in bomb shelters and our homes are being destroyed," local leaders stated. They demanded that the Israeli government cease all negotiations until Hezbollah is completely disarmed and pushed back from the border, insisting that a ceasefire without total disarmament only invites future aggression.

For now, with Aoun refusing to speak to Netanyahu and the fire from Lebanon continuing unabated, the "breathing room" Trump hoped for remains out of reach.
