The Report: Aoun Sets the Terms
In a sharp escalation of diplomatic rhetoric, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun released a formal statement today outlining Lebanon's immediate requirements for a permanent settlement with Israel. The declaration followed a meeting in Beirut with the British Minister for Middle East Affairs, where Aoun clarified that Lebanon would not move forward with direct negotiations until specific territorial conditions are met.
The Demand for Sovereignty
President Aoun emphasized that a cessation of hostilities is merely the first step, insisting that Israeli military presence on Lebanese soil must end immediately to facilitate a return to state control.
"The ceasefire that Lebanon demands from Israel is a natural starting point for direct contacts and negotiations, in accordance with the Presidential Initiative," the statement from Aoun's office read.

Shift in Tone at the Washington Summit
These forceful comments mark a significant departure from previous rhetoric. Earlier in the diplomatic process, Aoun had characterized an Israeli pullback as a "possible gesture of goodwill." By reclassifying it as a "fundamental condition," he has signaled a tougher stance.
The Lebanese presidency maintains that while they are open to the peace process, the physical exit of Israeli troops is the only mechanism that will allow the Lebanese state to fulfill its security obligations and prevent future escalations.
Aoun spoke to Rubio, thanking him for his efforts. He refused to talk to Netanyahu.
