October 7 Debate

Ex-Lapid Aide: Warning Debate Misses Point

Roee Konekul, who recently joined Benny Gantz's party, argues that debate over whether Netanyahu received advance warning before October 7 distracts from deeper strategic failures

Roee Konekul, who recently joined former Defense Minister Benny Gantz's political camp after serving as spokesman for opposition leader Yair Lapid, said during a live broadcast that the ongoing debate about October 7 is missing what really matters. "The entire discussion about October 7 is missing the main point," he stated. "We keep dealing with, and apparently someone has an interest in us dealing with, whether they woke up Bibi or not, whether there was a warning a few hours before or not."

His comments came after Haaretz reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received a warning from the United Arab Emirates prior to the October 7 Hamas massacre.

Konekul continued: "Let me reveal a secret to you: there was a massive tactical military failure on October 7. That's the tactical failure. But the important story is that we sailed with a broken compass for years beforehand."

Journalist Barak Ravid responded to Konekul's remarks with a single word: "Sad." Konekul fired back: "Barak, what's sad is that it's clear you didn't listen to what was said but just retweeted some Twitter bot. I said that the real and important discussion is the discussion about the strategic security concept that led us to the failure of October 7. The less important discussion is whether they woke up Bibi, at what time they woke up Bibi, and whether there was this or that intelligence warning. That's a discussion about a specific tactical failure that would have happened anyway — if not on October 7, then on another date. Netanyahu's interest is that we conduct that discussion and not the truly important one."

On social media, critics began attacking Konekul and calling on citizens considering voting for Gantz to reconsider, claiming that Gantz is strengthening Netanyahu.
