Israel Elections 2026

Netanyahu's mistake may cost him election

Political analyst Amit Segal says the prime minister's decision to attack Ofer Winter and his new party was a strategic error that pushed a natural ally into an independent run

Political analyst Amit Segal has weighed in on the growing tension within the right-wing bloc over the candidacy of Aluf Mishne (res.) Ofer Winter and his Amcha Yisrael party, arguing that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a grave error in how he handled the new political figure.

According to Segal, it was Natan Eshel, a close associate of the prime minister, who planted in Netanyahu's mind the idea that Winter posed a political threat and should be fought. In recent weeks, Eshel has been claiming that Winter is not part of the right-wing camp and that his candidacy is designed to bring down the right-wing bloc.

Segal makes clear that this thesis is fundamentally wrong, and that Winter is a committed right-winger with no intention of joining forces with Avigdor Lieberman or aligning with the opposition bloc. The decision to open a front against Winter, Segal argues, pushed him and his party into an independent position, rather than harnessing his electoral potential to strengthen the national camp.
