Unprecedented disclosures emerged this week about Mossad operations deep inside Iran, as former agency chief Dadi Barnea revealed for the first time the operational plan activated on day one of direct warfare in June 2025. Contrary to initial impressions worldwide that the episode represented a failure or reckless exposure of agents, it turned out to be a meticulously calculated psychological maneuver.
"We wanted to ensure that so many people would be arrested in Iran that they wouldn't be able to separate the wheat from the chaff, and in the end they'd release everyone," Barnea disclosed. The plan succeeded spectacularly: on the second day of fighting, approximately 21,000 people were arrested across the country on suspicion of collaboration with Israel.
Because all of them told identical stories about their daily routines, Iranian security mechanisms collapsed under the load and were forced to release the vast majority, with the real agents disappearing completely into the crowd. Barnea also addressed the heavy and painful human cost of innocent people who ended up in Iranian interrogation rooms solely because of the regime's false suspicions.
