A highly critical security emergency unfolded in the heart of a prominent Montreal Jewish neighborhood, leaving two individuals dead and a community in deep mourning. The violent incident drew a massive law enforcement response, triggered emergency alerts, and initially sparked severe concerns regarding the targeting of local religious infrastructure.

The chaotic event took place on Monday in the vibrant Côte-des-Neiges district, specifically focusing around the Westbury and Decarie Boulevard corridors. This densely populated sector serves as a central hub for thousands of Jewish families, housing kosher supermarkets, schools, and essential community establishments.

Initial gunfire erupted from the vicinity of the local Hilton Garden Inn hotel room, where a heavily armed suspect had set up an elevated sniper position. The camouflage, clad gunman had placed a calculated 911 emergency call to intentionally lure unsuspecting first responders into a lethal window ambush.

Responding officers were immediately met with high, powered rifle fire from the window, which contained a long gun stabilized by a tripod and targeted with a specialized scope. The intense exchange of bullets rapidly spread across the street, striking a commercial and residential building located directly opposite the hotel axis.

The fast, moving gun battle resulted in the tragic deaths of a Montreal police officer and an innocent civilian, while another person suffered severe wounds. The civilian fatality was identified as Michael Mizrahi, an Israeli national who moved to Canada years ago and operated a popular local suit shop.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, ground reports confirmed that Mizrahi was accidentally shot and killed by responding security forces after he exited a nearby building during the chaos. A local law enforcement official reportedly stated that the responding officer mistakenly thought he was a terrorist in the heat of the encounter.

Dozens of terrified civilians and hotel guests were quickly evacuated by police teams and relocated to a nearby Chabad center for physical protection. Local community members described the neighborhood as being in absolute shock, with tactical units roaming the streets with weapons drawn while helicopters patrolled overhead.

The suspect who initiated the ambush was successfully neutralized at the scene by responding specialized units before he could utilize additional ammunition from his tactical belt. Canadian authorities later arrested two additional shooters who were attempting to flee the area, allowing police to gradually lift the hermetic roadblocks.

A representative from the international ZAKA rescue unit stated that the deceased was a beloved and well, known figure who regularly prayed at the local synagogue. Volunteers are currently waiting for the major crimes unit to complete its forensic investigation so they can enter the site and prepare the body for burial in Israel.

While early assessments within the community feared an antisemitic assault, a preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was a criminal dispute rather than a nationalistic act of terror. This domestic outbreak of urban violence stands apart from the broader geopolitical warfare seen with international terror groups like Hamas terrorists, who launch ideological wars against civilian targets.
