Reports from Azerbaijani state-affiliated media, including APA and Report.az, confirm that Iranian forces launched a drone strike against Nakhchivan International Airport earlier today. Footage circulating on social media shows plumes of black smoke rising from the airfield following several loud explosions.

According to local sources, at least one Shahed-type "suicide" drone directly impacted the airport's main building. Additional reports suggest that "several more drones" and projectiles fell in other locations throughout the exclave, which borders Iran, Türkiye, and Armenia.

* Casualties: While the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense has not yet issued an official casualty count, emergency services including fire engines and paramedics were seen rushing to the airport site.

* Targeting: It remains unclear if the airport was the primary target or if the strike was the result of a stray projectile intended for a different location. However, the proximity to the Iranian border and Nakhchivan’s strategic importance make it a sensitive flashpoint.

The tone in Baku has shifted from diplomatic concern to outright condemnation. Pro-government media outlets have characterized the attack as the "treacherous mullah regime showing its true face."

This strike follows days of tension where Azerbaijan has been facilitating the evacuation of over 1,100 foreign nationals (including citizens from China, Russia, and the West) fleeing the war in Iran. Despite Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov’s recent assurances that Azerbaijani territory would not be used against Iran, the regime in Tehran appears to be lashing out at any neighbor perceived as a Western or Israeli partner.

The strike on Nakhchivan is particularly dangerous due to Azerbaijan’s mutual defense ties with Türkiye. Under the Shusha Declaration, an attack on one is viewed as an attack on both.

* The Turkish Factor: Turkish President Erdoğan has reportedly been briefed on the incident, and Ankara has already warned that it is "leaving nothing to chance" regarding the security of its borders.

* The Kurdish Front: The strike comes as rumors circulate of a "new front" opening on Iran's western border involving Kurdish groups, further heightening Tehran's paranoia regarding its neighbors.

The real question is how long will Iran's neighbors sit back and allow themselves to be attacked before they respond?
