North Korea has integrated artificial intelligence technology into the guidance systems of its tactical cruise missiles for the first time, according to the country's state-run news agency. The technological advancement was confirmed following a series of weapons tests overseen directly by leader Kim Jong Un.

The operational trials, which were also detected by the South Korean military, featured a coordinated launch of long-range artillery rockets, tactical ballistic missiles with specialized warheads, and precision cruise missiles. Kim Jong Un confirmed that the newly upgraded weapon systems are slated for immediate deployment to frontline artillery units stationed along the border with South Korea.

Automated Targeting and Modern Warfare

The tactical missiles demonstrate a high-precision strike capability within a 100-kilometer range, a radius that places the South Korean capital of Seoul entirely within reach. During the deployment review, Kim Jong Un stated that the trials proved the weaponry and automated launch systems have been successfully upgraded to meet modern warfare requirements.

Military analysts noted that while Pyongyang has previously reported using AI in unmanned aerial vehicles, this marks the regime's first public acknowledgment of embedding AI directly into missile guidance. Experts from the Asan Institute for Policy Studies and the Korea Institute for National Unification explain that the technology upgrades existing digital navigation systems, allowing missiles to identify targets and automatically lock onto them using real-time data just before impact.

Operational Data and Russian Cooperation

The rapid technological acceleration of North Korea's tactical arsenal occurs alongside deepening military cooperation with Moscow. Pyongyang has been supplying ballistic missiles and rockets to the Russian military for use in Ukraine. Independent researchers emphasize that this active battlefield deployment provides North Korea with invaluable operational data, which the regime is actively utilizing to refine, test, and improve the combat readiness of its own frontline weapon systems.
