Coachella for moderate Democrats
Bronx vs. Intifada: Ritchie Torres Defies Pro Palestinians with Mic Drop Moment | WATCH
When pro-Palestinian activists tried to silence Congressman Ritchie Torres mid-speech, they were met not with defiance. Over the jeers, Torres stood his ground, invoking his Bronx roots as Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” blared in the background.

At WelcomeFest, a gathering dubbed the “Coachella for moderate Democrats,” centrist Democratic leaders convened to address the party’s challenges following disappointing 2024 election results.
Held in a Washington, D.C., hotel basement, the daylong conference hosted by Welcome PAC featured prominent figures like Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), alongside seven of the 12 House Democrats who won in Trump-leaning districts, including Reps. Jared Golden (Maine), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Washington), and Adam Gray (California).
The consensus was clear: to win, Democrats must reject purity tests, embrace centrism, and prioritize issues resonating with everyday Americans. Suozzi, who won a 2024 special election by criticizing his party’s immigration stance, said, “There’s a hunger for people to work together, to try to find solutions and to talk in common sense terms.” Gluesenkamp Perez noted, “Most Americans are Blue Dogs. Politics has become irrelevant to most people because it has excluded the things that touch their life.”
Speakers criticized progressive groups like Justice Democrats and Indivisible, with Golden accusing them of undermining the party by pushing out moderates. Progressives countered, with Justice Democrats’ Usamah Andrabi calling WelcomeFest a “convention of corporate ghouls” and arguing that voters rejected elitist solutions in 2024, favoring a party that unites the working class against corporate interests.
Data analyst Lakshya Jain highlighted the electoral success of moderate candidates like Janelle Stelson over progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, urging the party to prioritize broadly appealing candidates. Liam Kerr, Welcome PAC co-founder, emphasized a shift from “leftist fever dreams” to a pragmatic movement.
Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY) was interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters from the "Globalize the Intifada" movement during his speech. The protesters, booed by attendees and removed by security, did not deter Torres, who declared, “No. I am from the Bronx”.
The protesters were drowned out by Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain.”
Torres, a vocal critic of the phrase "Globalize the Intifada" for its association with antisemitic violence, linked it to recent attacks, including the murder of two Israeli embassy workers in Washington, D.C.
