Russia Launches Massive Missile Strike on Kyiv, Killing at Least 15 as Air Defense Systems Overwhelmed

The overnight assault struck Kyiv, Brovary and several surrounding communities, triggering large fires at logistics hubs, warehouses, manufacturing facilities and residential buildings as emergency crews continued rescue and firefighting operations into Wednesday morning. In Kyiv's Obolonskyi district, a Russian strike hit a 20-story apartment building, sparking a fire, with warehouses, office buildings and several other structures damaged.

Zelenskyy has pressed the United States and other Western partners over Ukraine's need for more Patriot anti-ballistic missile defense systems to counter missile attacks from Russia. Last month's attacks proved devastating: In July, Russian attacks killed at least 377 civilians and wounded 2,129 others in Ukraine, making it the deadliest month of the invasion there since April 2022.

The escalation reflects an intensifying cycle of retaliation. Ukraine has mounted sustained drone strikes against Russian logistics infrastructure, targeting the Wildberries e-commerce platform in recent operations. Moscow's overnight assault appeared calibrated to strike similar civilian logistics targets within Ukrainian territory, expanding the war's reach beyond military installations into the economic infrastructure that sustains civilian life.
