A U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to the protective detail of Vice President JD Vance has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly leaking sensitive security information, an incident that has triggered an agency-wide anti-espionage retraining order and renewed scrutiny of the Service’s internal discipline.

According to the Secret Service, the agent’s security clearance was suspended and his access to agency systems revoked after undercover footage released by journalist James O’Keefe allegedly showed him discussing classified protective procedures with someone he believed to be a romantic interest. The material reportedly included details about protective formations, shift schedules, travel movements, and advance security planning, including images sent while aboard Air Force Two.

Deputy Secret Service Director Matthew Quinn said the agency has “zero tolerance” for conduct that could compromise the safety of protectees and confirmed that all personnel have been ordered to retake mandatory anti-espionage training. The investigation is ongoing, and the Secret Service has not ruled out further administrative or criminal consequences.

The episode comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the vice president’s security apparatus.

Just weeks earlier, a man was arrested after breaking into and vandalizing Vance’s private residence in Cincinnati. Federal authorities said the suspect caused extensive damage, including to a Secret Service vehicle, while the property was designated a restricted area. The suspect was armed with a hammer at the time of the incident. Vance and his family were not present during the break-in.

While officials say there is no operational link between the home attack and the alleged information leak, the timing has amplified concern inside the United States Secret Service about insider threats layered on top of an already volatile threat environment. The back-to-back incidents have underscored that risks to senior officials do not come solely from external actors, but also from lapses within the protective system itself.

The Secret Service has emphasized its long-standing culture of discretion and said it is reviewing whether additional safeguards are needed to prevent similar breaches. For an agency built on silence and precision, even a single leak is treated as a systemic failure.
