Wolfe, from Inwood, West Virginia, and a Musselman High School graduate, was shot after the attacker allegedly disarmed and fired Beckstrom's service weapon at him.

Beckstrom, 20, was hit multiple times first. A third Guard member returned fire, wounding the suspect. Both victims remain in critical condition at local hospitals, with initial erroneous reports of their deaths corrected by officials. The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome and was granted asylum in 2025, drove cross-country from Bellingham, Washington, before the assault.

The FBI is probing it as potential terrorism, though no motive or links to organizations have been established. In response, Trump ordered 500 more Guard troops to D.C. and a review of Afghan refugee programs.
