US-Iran Strait of Hormuz Conflict: Military Escalation

US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces attacked and permanently disabled three Iranian crude oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman region. The aggressive American response came after Iran's Revolutionary Guards launched ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships, an aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer, conducting routine patrols in the area. According to US military reports, the American vessels successfully evaded the Iranian missiles, with no casualties or damage to US forces.

In response to the failed attack, American forces launched a targeted operation against three tankers: the "Dooni," struck off the coast of Kharg Island; the "Stark 1," disabled near Jask Island; and the "Kilo," which was empty when attacked in the Gulf of Oman. US officials emphasized that the strikes targeted critical systems on the vessels to ensure their complete disablement, but only after crews were given explicit advance warning to abandon ship and board lifeboats. Footage from a nearby vessel captured the warnings broadcast in Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu, with Iranian crew members heard trying to comprehend the situation moments before impact.

CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper explained that the targeted tankers are part of Iran's "shadow fleet," valued at billions of dollars and serving as a crucial economic lifeline funding Revolutionary Guards operations and their proxies throughout the Middle East. Cooper stressed that the message to Iran follows a clear price equation: firing on two American ships will result in a heavy economic cost and the disabling of three Iranian vessels. He noted that the United States will not hesitate to continue targeting Iran's oil fleet, which remains exposed and lacks adequate defensive measures.

Iranian authorities confirmed that the tanker anchored near Kharg Island—a strategic hub for Iranian oil exports—was hit by four missiles and its crew evacuated without casualties, but made no mention of the two additional tankers struck.

This follows a series of military confrontations in the region, including an American strike on Larak Island to prevent the placement of naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, an Iranian counterstrike using missiles and drones against Gulf states, and extensive US attacks on dozens of targets in southern Iran.

US President Donald Trump issued additional warnings about possible further strikes on sensitive sites, characterizing the Gulf events as a limited military confrontation aimed at defending freedom of navigation and American security interests.
