An Emirates Airbus A380 flying from Dubai to London Heathrow declared a general emergency and diverted to Frankfurt Airport on Thursday, according to aviation news site AIRLIVE.
Flight EK31, operated by the aircraft registered A6-EDX, was cruising at 40,000 feet over European airspace, roughly six hours into the flight, when the crew set transponder code 7700, the signal for a general emergency. The double-decker jet then descended and diverted to Frankfurt.
The aircraft landed safely on runway 25L at 4:09 p.m. local time and was parked at a remote stand.
Emirates confirmed the diversion, citing operational reasons, but did not give further details. The cause of the emergency remains unclear.
The airline arranged a recovery flight from Frankfurt to London Heathrow, scheduled to depart at 5:30 p.m. local time, to carry passengers on to their destination.
The diversion comes a day after a separate incident in which a flydubai co-pilot attacked his captain on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. There is no indication the two events are connected.
