A catastrophic explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in eastern Alberta left at least seven soldiers dead and dozens injured on Saturday, military sources told Global News. The incident occurred during a live-fire training exercise at the base, located approximately 210 kilometres east of Edmonton.

According to military sources cited by the Canadian network, the blast took place around 4:00 p.m. local time. The sources said ammunition appears to have struck a gas pipeline or gas well on the base grounds during the exercise. The Canadian Armed Forces has not released an official casualty count, and the exact circumstances remain under investigation.

High winds reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour accelerated the fire's spread, pushing flames beyond the base perimeter into surrounding areas. Fire crews from multiple jurisdictions were called to the scene, and throughout the night efforts continued to bring the blaze under control. Local authorities said the fire is now relatively contained, but crews remain on site monitoring for flare-ups.

The scale of casualties forced a major emergency response across Alberta's health system. Hospitals in Edmonton were placed under "Code Orange" protocol, activated for mass-casualty incidents, and ambulances and medical teams were dispatched from locations across the province.

Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, described the event as a disaster that occurs once every 15 to 25 years. He said health centres in the town of Wainwright were completely overwhelmed with wounded.

Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed there were fatalities and injuries in the incident but declined to provide specific numbers. He called the situation sensitive and evolving, adding that he could not recall a similar event in recent memory. The Canadian Armed Forces said details of casualties will be released only after families have been notified.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed grief over the disaster and said federal and provincial authorities are working together to assist the victims. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said he spoke with the Prime Minister and Defence Minister and thanked emergency crews.

Despite the fire spreading beyond the base, no evacuation of area residents has been ordered as of the latest reports. Authorities asked the public to stay away from the incident site, keep roads clear for rescue forces, and avoid coming to the local health centre except in cases of urgent medical need.
