Trump Admin. Demands Italy Replace Iran at World Cup

Paolo Zampolli, a Trump envoy, said he raised the idea with both the president and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, suggesting Italy could take Iran’s place if the team withdraws. “With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” Zampolli said.

A senior envoy to US President Donald Trump has proposed replacing Iran with Italy in the upcoming World Cup, according to a Financial Times report.

Paolo Zampolli, a Trump envoy, said he raised the idea with both the president and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, suggesting Italy could take Iran’s place if the team withdraws. “With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” Zampolli said.

The proposal reportedly comes amid efforts to ease tensions between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following disagreements linked to the Iran war.

Iran has already qualified for the tournament but has raised concerns about playing matches in the United States, demanding that its group-stage games be moved to Mexico. FIFA has so far said matches will proceed as scheduled, though Iran has indicated its final participation will depend on further discussions.

The issue adds to previous tensions between Iran and international football authorities. Last month, members of Iran’s women’s national team drew global attention after players requested asylum in Australia during an international visit.

No official response has been issued by the White House, FIFA, or the Italian Football Federation.

Italy failed to qualify for the tournament after losing a playoff match earlier this year, marking its third consecutive absence from the World Cup.

Under FIFA rules, the organization would have discretion to select a replacement if a qualified team withdraws. Regional bodies are expected to push for a replacement from the same confederation, which could complicate any move to include Italy.
