Tehran's Red Line

Iran Warns Israel Over Threat to Khamenei's Son

Foreign Minister Araghchi warns of 'powerful and immediate' retaliation after Defense Minister Katz targets Mojtaba Khamenei • Araghchi's 'pet' remark escalates tensions | As nuclear talks stall (Middle East)

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a stark warning to Israel on Wednesday, declaring that any threat against Iranian leadership or citizens would trigger a "powerful and immediate response" --- the latest escalation in a war of words that now directly targets Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei's son.

The threat came hours after Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated publicly that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Iran's Supreme Leader and widely viewed as his father's successor, is "designated for elimination." Araghchi's response was unequivocal: "Any threat to our people and our leadership will receive a powerful and immediate response."

The exchange marks a dangerous new phase in the standoff between Jerusalem and Tehran, with Israeli officials now openly naming members of Iran's ruling family as military targets. According to sources familiar with the matter, the move signals Israel's determination to hold Iran's leadership personally accountable for proxy attacks and nuclear escalation.

Araghchi's 'Pet' Remark Adds Fuel to Fire

In a separate statement that further inflamed tensions, Araghchi took aim at US President Donald Trump, referencing recent American commitments to restrain Israel. "Trump pledged that the United States would silence its 'pets' in Tel Aviv," the Iranian foreign minister declared. "If they ignore their 'master,' Iran will teach them a lesson."

The inflammatory language comes as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran show signs of progress elsewhere. Recent talks in Switzerland, mediated by Oman, were described by both sides as "constructive," though no breakthrough was achieved on Iran's nuclear program. Saudi sources confirmed Wednesday that a preliminary agreement has been reached to release $3 billion in frozen Iranian funds, marking a potential thaw in US-Iran financial disputes.

Yet the diplomatic opening appears fragile. Defense Minister Katz warned Israeli reporters this week that "tomorrow we could be in a war with Iran," revealing the razor-thin margin between negotiation and conflict.

Israel's Regional Warning

Israeli President Isaac Herzog, speaking during a state visit to Romania, delivered a blistering critique of Iran's regional ambitions. "Iran's aspiration to become a nuclear threshold state is a real threat to the State of Israel," Herzog declared before the Romanian parliament. "Iran's presumption to dictate Lebanon's future undermines the possibility of advancing toward peace and security."

Herzog praised Romania for its steadfast support of Israel since the October 7 attacks and hailed the recent memorandum of understanding between Israel and Lebanon as "a significant breakthrough for peace." Yet the president's words carried an unmistakable warning: Israel views Iran's nuclear program and regional interference as existential threats requiring decisive action.

The convergence of threats, from Mojtaba Khamenei's targeting to Hormuz clashes to nuclear brinkmanship, suggests the fragile diplomatic opening between Washington and Tehran may collapse under the weight of Israeli-Iranian hostility. With Defense Minister Katz warning war could erupt within 48 hours, the region remains on a hair trigger despite ongoing negotiations.
