Trump Cuts Joint Drills With South Korea

The directive, issued a day after the president praised his relationship with North Korea's leader on social media, has alarmed defense officials in Washington and Seoul and raised concerns about regional stability

President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump's directive to immediately scale back joint military exercises with South Korea has sent shockwaves through defense establishments in Washington and Seoul. The unexpected move has raised concerns about potential damage to the strategic alliance and the deterrence framework against North Korea.

Defense and policy officials warn the decision carries far-reaching implications for operational readiness of forces in the field. Trump linked the move to his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, while also expressing anger at Seoul for refusing to support the American initiative to denuclearize Iran.

In a social media post, Trump argued the exercises are costly and send a hostile message. "Based on the very good relationship I have with Kim Jong Un, of North Korea, I am not happy with the fact that the United States agreed long ago to participate in joint military exercises with South Korea," the president wrote.

The president emphasized his deep disagreement with South Korea over Iran, noting "they said 'no thank you!'" when asked to join the Denuclearization. The annual exercise, scheduled to run 11 days with 18,000 South Korean troops and American forces and include live-fire drills and water obstacle crossings, now faces comprehensive last-minute structural changes.

Against this backdrop, North Korea conducted two ballistic missile launches toward the Sea of Japan. Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry characterized the drills as a "rehearsal for aggressive war," while Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi warned that North Korean actions constitute "a threat to the peace and security of our country, the region, and the international community."
