Despite Israel’s successful thwarting of a major Hezbollah attack on Sunday morning, Kirby emphasized that the risk of an Iranian assault on Israel persists, according to Israel national news.

“We believe Iran remains poised to launch an attack if they choose to do so, which is why we have maintained an enhanced military presence in the region,” Kirby told Channel 12 News.

He continued, “Our message to Iran is clear and unwavering: Do not escalate. There is no justification for increasing tensions or starting a regional conflict. And if necessary, we are prepared to defend Israel.”

Kirby also noted that US aircraft carriers deployed to the region in response to the Iranian threat will stay in place as long as needed to protect Israel, US troops, and facilities in the area. On the topic of ceasefire negotiations, he remarked, “The fact that discussions are ongoing and that working groups are now in Doha is a positive development. It indicates that dialogue continues and there is hope that remaining issues can be resolved and progress can be made.”
