Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James drew criticism over the weekend after video circulated showing him moving his hips during the national anthem before a game against the Sacramento Kings, prompting accusations that he was being disrespectful.
The incident occurred Sunday night at Crypto.com Arena, moments before tipoff. In footage shared online, James can be seen subtly rotating his hips and shifting his stance while the anthem played. Some commentators interpreted the movement as James practicing a golf swing rather than standing still in the customary posture observed by many players.
Sports radio host Craig Carton criticized James on his podcast Monday, accusing the veteran forward of disrespecting the anthem and the military by not remaining motionless during the ceremony. Carton framed the moment as a sign of disregard for team norms and national symbolism, arguing that pregame rituals should be treated with seriousness regardless of personal beliefs.
James did not kneel, turn away, or otherwise make an overt political gesture during the anthem, and there was no indication that his movements were intended as a protest. Teammates standing nearby did not visibly react, and no action was taken by team officials or the league.
