Norway's players and fans erupted into their now-famous "Viking Row" celebration on Tuesday after Erling Haaland's late tap-in secured a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, sending Norway into the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Haaland scored the match-winner in the 86th minute, his fifth goal of the tournament, putting him just one behind Golden Boot leaders Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. After the final whistle, Haaland and captain Martin Ødegaard led the squad in joining supporters for the synchronized rowing chant that has become the signature image of Norway's tournament.

The celebration, created by Norwegian superfan Ole Frøystad in 2025, sees fans sit shoulder to shoulder, rowing their arms in unison to a drumbeat while chanting "ro," the Norwegian word for row, before rising together in a final roar. Frøystad has described it as a tribute to Viking crews rowing into battle a thousand years ago. What started as a fan ritual has since spread to the players themselves, and now shows up everywhere from stadium stands to city squares to a recent Norway-fan appearance at a New York Mets game.

Norway will face five-time champion Brazil in the Round of 16 on Sunday, July 5, at MetLife Stadium in New York, in the two nations' first-ever World Cup meeting.
