Arson Attack Reported at Former East London Synagogue
Counter-Terrorism Policing is investigating a suspected arson attack at the historic East London Central Synagogue in Whitechapel. The incident is being treated as a potential hate crime linked to a recent surge in arson attacks and violence targeting Jewish institutions across London

Counter Terrorism Policing is investigating a suspected deliberate arson attack at the historic former East London Central Synagogue in Whitechapel early this morning (Tuesday).
The London Fire Brigade was called to the building on Nelson Street at approximately 5:16 AM BST. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control. Initial CCTV footage and police assessments indicate the fire was started deliberately. No injuries were reported and the damage is believed to be limited.
The building, constructed in 1923, served as a central synagogue for the Jewish community in London’s East End for nearly a century before closing around 2020. It holds significant historical and cultural importance.
Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are treating the incident with the highest seriousness and are examining possible links to a recent wave of arson attacks and attempted arsons targeting Jewish institutions, schools, and properties across London.

Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors antisemitism in the UK, described the attack as deeply concerning amid a sharp rise in incidents since late 2025.
A police spokesperson said: “We are working closely with Counter Terrorism Policing and the local Jewish community. Officers remain at the scene and inquiries are ongoing.”
No arrests have been made so far. The investigation continues.
Jewish community leaders have called for increased security at remaining synagogues and Jewish buildings while urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
