An Israeli court on Wednesday lifted a gag order, permitting publication of the name of the primary suspect in an investigation into sedative-laced baby food that resulted in five young children being hospitalized. The suspect has been identified as Yan Shamla, approximately 40 years old, from southern Israel. A magistrate's court extended his detention by six days Wednesday morning.
Investigators believe Shamla acted deliberately in an attempt to poison infants, according to statements presented to the court. Authorities reportedly discovered videos on his personal computer that may be connected to the case. The investigation, which has involved Israel's Shin Bet security service, began roughly two months ago when several toddlers were hospitalized after consuming Prinok-brand fruit purees. Shamla was arrested at his home and taken in for questioning regarding his suspected involvement in the incident.
