A 71-year-old woman died following a confrontation with police in Port Orange, Florida, after she entered a police station armed with a handgun and fired a single shot. Linda Jean Croto walked into the station lobby, discharged her weapon toward the evidence room, then exited to the parking lot outside, according to local authorities.

Three officers who responded to the scene ordered her to drop her firearm, but she refused to comply. The officers then opened fire, striking her. After falling to the ground, Croto reached toward the gun again, prompting additional shots from the responding officers.

She was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died the following day. Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino described the sequence of events: "She exits the front lobby and confronts the three officers arriving on scene. At that point, officer-involved shooting occurs."

When asked whether Croto had put down her weapon before officers fired, Chief Marino clarified: "At that point, no. She was still holding the firearm when the officers confronted her."

Caleb Lemons, a witness who works nearby, said he "saw a lady coming out of the police station with a gun in her hand, but it was pointed down."

Family members told investigators that Croto's husband had recently died and that she had been struggling with severe personal distress during this period. No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation into the shooting, standard procedure in cases involving police use of deadly force.
