Rav Auerbach orders protests over arrests

Peleg Yerushalmi leader calls demonstrations in Jerusalem and Gush Dan for Thursday 4pm after wave of arrests of bnei Torah and avreichim; says chareidi establishment has abandoned them

Peleg Yerushalmi protest

Rav Azriel Auerbach, head of the Peleg Yerushalmi, instructed his followers Wednesday to hold mass protests across the country against the arrest of yeshiva students and kollel avreichim in recent days. The protests are set for Thursday at 4pm in Jerusalem and Gush Dan.

According to a statement from the Committee to Save the Torah World, the rosh yeshiva ordered the demonstrations following the arrests of bnei Torah by military authorities "for the crime of learning Torah, and their abandonment by the chareidi establishment."

Before rabbanim of the committee, Rav Auerbach spoke sharply against the abandonment of yeshiva students by those who had previously declared they would stand by them at such a time. Maran noted that the protest is also against the terrible chillul Hashem that yeshiva students and kollel avreichim are thrown into prison, and no one opens his mouth or utters a word.

The protest comes against the backdrop of a wave of arrests of bnei yeshivos in recent weeks, and amid fears that the arrests will only increase.

Thursday's planned demonstration is expected to be one of the largest protests in recent months. In August, several dozen Peleg activists held a protest that blocked Highway 4 and sections of Jabotinsky Street against the arrest of yeshiva students.
