Border Police Smuggling Prevention: Security Operations

Border Police operating at Ofer Crossing, near Jerusalem, uncovered a sophisticated smuggling operation on Tuesday when they discovered 11 Palestinians hidden inside a specially modified commercial vehicle. The individuals, all residents of the West Bank without valid entry permits, were found concealed in a false compartment behind a pile of used tires.

The discovery came during what began as a routine inspection at the crossing, one of the busiest checkpoints in the Jerusalem area. Officers from the Border Police's Jerusalem Envelope unit, working alongside checkpoint personnel, stopped the suspicious commercial vehicle for closer examination after it raised concerns that it might be transporting people illegally into Israel.

The checkpoint commander noticed an unusually large stack of used tires in the rear section of the commercial vehicle. He ordered a thorough search of the vehicle. When officers carefully moved the tires aside, they revealed a false wall that had been specially installed for smuggling purposes.

Inside the sophisticated hiding space, authorities found 11 West Bank residents, none of whom possessed the required permits to enter or remain in Israel. The individuals were crammed into the narrow space created between the vehicle's actual wall and the false partition.

The vehicle's driver, a Be'er Sheva resident in his 60s, was arrested at the scene along with the 11 unauthorized individuals. All suspects were transferred to the Border Police Jerusalem Envelope unit's investigations and intelligence office for further questioning.

This incident is the latest in a series of smuggling attempts recently thwarted by security forces. Just days earlier, authorities arrested six Palestinians who attempted to breach the security fence near Tarqumiya, in a joint operation by police and the Israel Defense Forces.

In another recent case, an individual without proper documentation was caught impersonating an observant Jew, wearing a kippah, at a restaurant in Holon, apparently attempting to avoid suspicion. These varied incidents demonstrate the creativity employed by smugglers and those seeking unauthorized entry in their attempts to cross into Israel.

Security forces continue intensive operations to prevent the smuggling of individuals without permits, employing advanced intelligence methods and conducting thorough inspections at crossings. Operations at Ofer Crossing, considered one of the busiest checkpoints in the Jerusalem area, are carried out routinely and professionally by Border Police and checkpoint personnel.
