For the second time in less than a week, an unauthorized civilian drone penetrated the airspace of Ben Gurion International Airport on Tuesday.
The Israel Airports Authority reported that the incident showcased the airport's security and control systems' ability to identify potential threats in real time, manage the situation operationally, and quickly locate the drone operator on the ground.
At 11:40 a.m., a control room operator at Ben Gurion spotted a drone approaching the airport's airspace. Within minutes, the system confirmed the drone had entered the airport's municipal boundaries. From the moment of detection, a coordinated response involving control room staff, operational teams, security personnel, and field units was activated. Airport police were immediately dispatched to locate the drone operator.
A localized operational freeze was implemented for several minutes as the drone entered the restricted zone.
Throughout the incident, airport staff maintained continuous tracking of the drone's movement. The combination of advanced monitoring systems, alert control room operators, and field observers enabled security teams to pinpoint the operator's location and direct police forces to the site.
Less than an hour after the initial detection, authorities located the drone operator. Upon questioning, he explained that he was filming promotional footage for a construction company. The incident concluded successfully and demonstrates Ben Gurion's layered security approach: advanced technology combined with the professional vigilance of airport personnel, enabling real-time detection of unusual activity, rapid response, and complete resolution through locating the source on the ground.
The Airports Authority emphasized that unauthorized drone flights near Ben Gurion pose serious risks to aviation safety. Flying drones in restricted airspace without required permits and in violation of regulations is prohibited.
