Eurovision Boycott: Dutch Broadcaster Rejects 2027 Return

The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS announced Monday that it will continue boycotting the Eurovision Song Contest, dashing hopes raised just a day earlier by reports suggesting the Netherlands might return to the competition. The decision comes despite widespread speculation that the country would participate in Eurovision 2027, scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria.

On Sunday, the widely-read Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that the Netherlands would officially return to the contest. The report, filed by the paper's senior media correspondent, sparked optimism among Eurovision fans that the Dutch boycott might be ending. However, AVROTROS issued a statement Monday morning making clear that it has no intention of returning to the competition in the coming year.

In its official statement, AVROTROS criticized the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes Eurovision, claiming the contest is no longer neutral. The broadcaster indirectly referenced Israel, noting that a country currently engaged in a large-scale military conflict continues to compete in the contest. AVROTROS added that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East significantly impact the competition and generate considerable controversy.

The Dutch broadcaster also addressed new rules recently adopted by the EBU, which stipulate that a country experiencing a geopolitical or military crisis may be barred from hosting Eurovision if the organization decides to invoke the provision. Ironically, while AVROTROS itself had called for such regulations, the broadcaster stated it remains unsatisfied with the rules as implemented.

According to AVROTROS, the new regulations fail to restore neutrality and independence to Eurovision's character. The broadcaster concluded its statement by declaring that participation in Eurovision no longer aligns with AVROTROS values of "credibility, independence, and humanity."

While AVROTROS made clear it will not return to Eurovision, the statement did not definitively answer whether the Netherlands itself will participate. AVROTROS is only one component of the Dutch broadcasting system, and the Dutch public broadcasting association NPO has the authority to reassign responsibility for Eurovision participation to a different broadcaster.

In addition to announcing its continued boycott, AVROTROS stated Monday that it is transferring responsibility for Eurovision participation back to NPO. The public broadcasting association will now determine the country's future in the contest. NPO could select another television network willing to participate in Eurovision, meaning that despite AVROTROS's boycott, the Netherlands might still return to the competition.

Eurovision 2027 is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, with semi-finals planned for May 11 and 13, and the grand final on Saturday night, May 15. Israel faces a unique challenge as these dates coincide with Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers.

The final decision regarding Dutch participation will be made by the NPO public broadcasting association in the coming weeks. Until then, the question remains open: will the Netherlands return to Eurovision through another broadcaster, or will the boycott continue through 2027?
