Iraqi security forces have uncovered scenes reminiscent of a Hollywood thriller: millions of dollars and billions of dinars buried deep underground, gold bars hidden in private homes, and dozens of luxury vehicles parked in the compounds of former government officials. These discoveries represent only the tip of the iceberg in Operation "Dawn" - the largest anti-corruption campaign in Iraq's history.
Launched in late June 2026 under Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, the operation has included unprecedented raids in Baghdad's Green Zone and other provinces. In recent weeks alone, authorities have confiscated more than $100 million in cash, hundreds of kilograms of gold and jewelry, dozens of luxury cars, and over 100 real estate properties.
Some of the money was buried so deep beneath homes that heavy excavation equipment was needed to retrieve it. The operation has led to the arrest of dozens of parliament members, former senior officials including deputy oil ministers, and businesspeople
