Family members of Haimanot Kasao and activists campaigning for her return held a demonstration Wednesday, 941 days after she disappeared from an absorption center. The family continues to demand progress in the investigation and is now calling for the case to be transferred to the Shin Bet.
Relatives, activists and supporters gathered for the protest led by the Kasao family and the headquarters established to find Haimanot. The demonstration centers on their demand that responsibility for investigating her disappearance be handed over to Israel's internal security service.
In a statement, the headquarters for Haimanot criticized how the investigation has been conducted. According to the campaign, during the 941 days since she vanished, the case file has already passed through "four hands," yet there is still no lead that might bring them closer to finding her.
Against this backdrop, family members and activists decided to escalate their campaign and continue pressing for the case to be transferred to Shin Bet oversight, hoping the move will finally produce a breakthrough in the investigation into her disappearance.
The protest also comes in response to what the campaign describes as Jerusalem Municipality's refusal to permit the Kasao family to set up a protest tent as part of their effort to find her.
The headquarters for Haimanot charges that the investigation is being handled "casually" and makes clear that the family has no intention of ending their campaign until meaningful progress is made in the case.
The goal of the demonstration, organizers said, is to keep Haimanot Kasao's story in the public eye and maintain pressure to transfer investigative responsibility to the Shin Bet, after 941 days in which her family is still waiting for any lead that might bring them closer to finding her.
