Nepal Glacial Lake Flood: 384 Missing After Disaster

A catastrophic natural disaster has struck the border region between Nepal and China, where flash floods and severe mudslides have left at least 384 tourists and trekkers missing and eight people confirmed dead. The devastating event occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time near the Bhote Koshi River, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and buildings throughout the area.

Nepal's government has declared a state of emergency and launched large-scale rescue operations using helicopters, security forces, and local residents. The cabinet convened an emergency session to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Meanwhile, government and military hospitals in the capital city of Kathmandu have cleared special areas to receive injured victims from the affected region.

The dramatic rise in water levels swept away police stations, customs offices, and private homes. Emergency authorities issued urgent warnings to communities downstream as far as Chitwan District, which borders India, amid concerns that water levels could continue rising and threaten additional areas.

Nepal's Tourism Board reported that authorities are "working to verify the location and safety status of tourists and trekkers who were in or passed through the affected areas." Among those listed as missing are citizens from Nepal, India, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, and the Netherlands.

Preliminary assessments by security forces indicate the disaster was caused by the sudden burst of a glacial lake upstream on the Bhote Koshi River. This phenomenon, known as a GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood), occurs when a glacial lake suddenly ruptures and releases massive quantities of water at high velocity.

On the Chinese side, reports indicate the mudslide severely impacted areas near Gyirong Port in Tibet. According to these reports, "the disaster severed roads leading to the port on the Chinese side, as well as communications and power supply." The infrastructure damage is hampering rescue efforts and preventing aid from reaching isolated areas.

The Nepal-China border region is known as a popular tourist destination, particularly among climbers and trekkers visiting the Himalayan area. Recent years have seen a significant increase in tourist arrivals to the region, with many visiting national parks and renowned climbing sites.

Authorities continue identification and search operations for the missing, while the interior minister is preparing to deliver a detailed report to parliament on the scope of the disaster and rescue efforts. Natural disasters in the Himalayan region are not uncommon, but the scale of the current event is considered particularly severe.
