War Crimes Trial

Kosovo Ex-President Faces 45-Year Sentence

Hashim Thaçi, once hailed as a national hero, awaits sentencing at The Hague tribunal for alleged murder and torture of over 100 political opponents during the 1990s conflict

Former Kosovo President Faces Up to 45 Years in War Crimes Verdict

The Special Tribunal for Kosovo in The Hague is set to deliver its verdict Wednesday in the trial of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi and three other senior commanders, with prosecutors seeking a 45-year prison sentence.

Thaçi, 58, was arrested on November 5, 2020, the same day the indictment against him was confirmed by the special tribunal. He immediately announced his resignation as Kosovo's president, was detained in Pristina, and transferred that day to the tribunal's detention facility in The Hague.

The verdict has generated intense anticipation in both Kosovo and Serbia, with foreign embassies including the United States mission issuing warnings to their citizens to avoid gatherings amid fears of violent unrest.

Prosecutors are demanding 45-year sentences for Thaçi and the three other former Kosovo Liberation Army commanders. The four are accused of murdering and torturing more than 100 political opponents and allies of Serbian security forces during the bloody conflict of the 1990s.

The defendants categorically reject all charges against them. Thaçi's defense attorneys argued in court that the accusations are based on false claims and represent an attempt to rewrite history, emphasizing that no evidence was presented directly linking their client to the acts or proving actual command over the other commanders.

The special tribunal in The Hague was established in 2015 following heavy international pressure to investigate and prosecute former fighters for crimes committed during and after the conflict. For many Kosovo residents, Thaçi is considered a national hero, and the international judicial institution faces sharp criticism throughout the territory.

The Kosovo War (1998–1999) was a bloody armed conflict that erupted in the Kosovo region between Yugoslav (Serbian) security forces and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), an Albanian guerrilla organization seeking independence.

The fighting escalated following a policy of repression and ethnic cleansing led by Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević against the Albanian population in the region, resulting in hundreds of thousands of refugees and severe massacres.

In spring 1999, NATO intervened in the conflict and launched an extensive aerial bombing campaign against Serbian targets, ultimately leading to the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo and the deployment of an international peacekeeping force. The conflict ended with approximately 13,000 dead, and in 2008 Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia.
