The expanding Israeli presence in Thailand is evolving into a diplomatic challenge for Jerusalem.
According to a Channel 12 report, Israel's embassy in Bangkok has recently been working with local authorities and the public following an accumulation of complaints against Israeli tourists, residents, and business owners in the country.
Israeli officials fear that if the tension continues, it will no longer remain confined to tourism. Messages conveyed to Israeli representatives in Thailand have indicated the situation could affect relations between Jerusalem and Bangkok.
In an effort to calm the situation, Israel's deputy ambassador gave an interview to local media and addressed the Thai public in their own language.
What's Bothering the Thais?
A significant portion of the criticism doesn't involve serious offenses, but rather the daily behavior of some Israelis. Complaints have been received about shouting and arguments in public places and loud music during nighttime hours.
Another issue that has become a point of friction is the visibility of Israeli businesses in tourist areas. Locals have complained about establishments displaying signage exclusively in Hebrew, without Thai or any other language that would allow residents to understand what's written.
"We don't even understand what's written on your signs," locals told Israeli representatives.
But the Thai scrutiny doesn't stop at tourist behavior. According to reports in the country, authorities are also examining suspicions regarding the activities of some Israeli business owners, including issues about taxation and real estate holdings.
The expansion of concentrated Israeli communities in certain areas has also drawn criticism from some residents, who claim it's changing the character of tourist destinations.
40% More Israelis and Changing Attitudes
The tension comes alongside a spike in the number of Israelis visiting Thailand. According to local immigration authority data cited in the report, the past year saw approximately a 40% increase in tourists from Israel.
A survey conducted in the country indicates, according to the report, a significant shift in attitudes toward the Israeli presence: 77% of Thai respondents expressed support for increased supervision and enforcement regarding Israelis.
The Foreign Ministry is also examining whether the local criticism is receiving organized external support.
Videos documenting unusual incidents involving Israelis have been circulating on social media in recent months, and there is suspicion that at least part of the campaign against Israelis is being promoted or funded by pro-Palestinian elements.
