The war in Ukraine continues to claim lives, and a new video circulating from the Donbas front captures one of its quieter tragedies.
The footage shows a Russian soldier coming across the body of a Ukrainian fighter killed in recent fighting. As he searches through the man's personal effects, he pulls out a wallet, and inside it, a small handwritten note, carefully preserved.
The note was written by the fighter's young daughter, Anastasia. In simple, heartbreaking words, she had sent her father off to war with a message of longing and hope.
"I remember the fun days and the trips before the war," she wrote. "I hope you come home soon, we'll always wait for you at home. I love you, your little Anastasia."
The Ukrainian soldier never made it back. The note remained in his wallet until a Russian soldier, standing over his body on a battlefield in eastern Ukraine, became its next reader.
