Cohen-Eliya: Bennett and Liberman's plan

Legal scholar Prof. Moshe Cohen-Eliya says Bennett's quick backing of Eisenkot is a calculated move designed to fail,  clearing the way for Bennett and Liberman to join Netanyahu

The political storm following the 2026 election count and the deadlock in coalition talks continues to draw sharp reactions across Israel's public sphere. Legal scholar Prof. Moshe Cohen-Eliya published a pointed post on Monday attacking the conduct of the "Change Bloc" and what he sees as the emerging strategy of its leaders.

"We are living in a clarifying period. All the lies of the old hegemony are being exposed, from 'we won't sit with the Arabs' to 'we won't sit with the chariedim,'" Cohen-Eliya opened.

"Bennett knows exactly what he's doing"

Addressing the contacts ahead of the recommendation round at the President's Residence and the moves by former prime minister Naftali Bennett, he argued that backing Gadi Eisenkot is a calculated step meant to bring about his failure.

"The best thing that could happen to the people of Israel is for Gadi Eisenkot to receive the mandate first, be humiliated first, come out looking foolish from every possible direction, and fail," he wrote.

According to him, Bennett's swift support is no accident: "Apparently, Bennett was generous enough, without any conditions, to announce that he will recommend Eisenkot to form the government. Bennett is no idiot. He knows full well that he is digging Eisenkot's grave, and then he will join Netanyahu, perhaps with Liberman."

"65% of the nation are right-wing"

Cohen-Eliya grounded his assessment in the claim that Israel's political map requires reliance on the right-wing majority among the public.

"Both of them understand that 65 percent of the entire nation are right-wing. And if you want to be a long-term player in Israeli politics, you need to play on the right-wing field. It also took Gideon Sa'ar time to internalize that," he wrote.
