Behind the scenes

Bibi pressed Trump on Iran in "tough" call

In a tough and direct conversation, the prime minister urged the US president to return to military action against Iran after Tuesday's midterm elections, while Trump prefers to continue diplomatic contacts with Tehran and explore the possibility of a deal

US President Donald Trump said he held a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "I spoke with Netanyahu about Iran, the conversation was very good," Trump said.

According to a report on Axios, Prime Minister Netanyahu pressed Trump in yesterday's call to resume strikes on Iran immediately after the US midterm elections on Tuesday.

Trump, by contrast, wants to allow diplomatic contacts with Tehran to advance before deciding whether to resume military action.

An Israeli source described the conversation as "tough," while an American source called it "direct." According to Axios, Netanyahu is concerned about Trump's preference to continue on the diplomatic track for now.

Trump is working on two parallel tracks: advancing a deal that would allow talks with Iran to resume, alongside preparing for the possibility of a return to large-scale military action after the elections. On Saturday, the president said that talks with Tehran are "progressing very well" and that he is in no rush to resume strikes.

In the background, Vice President JD Vance sent a letter last week to senior Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei, addressing the possibility of resuming negotiations. At the same time, Qatar continues its mediation efforts, and its representatives met today with Iranian officials for the third consecutive day in an attempt to formulate understandings that would allow direct talks between the US and Iran to resume.
