Sevastopol Attack

Ex-Ukrainian Officer Killed in Crimea Blast

Valery Trankovsky, who defected to Russia in 2014 after commanding Ukraine's only submarine, died when a bomb hidden in a trash bin detonated in Sevastopol

Former Ukrainian Naval Officer Killed in Crimea Explosion

A deadly explosion struck central Sevastopol in Crimea on Thursday morning, killing a man identified by Russian media as Valery Trankovsky, a naval officer with a controversial past. The blast occurred on Nakhimov Avenue when an explosive device concealed in a trash receptacle detonated as the victim walked past. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trankovsky's military background makes the incident particularly significant. He previously commanded the Zaporizhzhia, which was Ukraine's sole submarine before Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. When Russian forces took control of the peninsula that year, Trankovsky defected and continued his naval career under the Russian flag—a move documented in reports from that period detailing the fate of Ukrainian military assets in Crimea.

The explosion took place in a public area near a bench and stairway. Some accounts suggest Trankovsky was accompanied by another individual at the time of the blast.

Shortly after the attack, Russian media reported that a woman had been detained on suspicion of involvement. However, conflicting accounts have emerged: some sources now claim the initial suspicion was unfounded and that she had no connection to planting the device.

As of now, no group has credibly claimed responsibility for the attack, and Russian authorities have not released official information identifying who orchestrated it or what the motive might have been.

The victim's history as a Ukrainian officer who switched allegiance to Russia adds a layer of complexity to the incident, though investigators have not publicly drawn conclusions about whether this background played a role in his targeting.
